Lang Lang was born on June 14, 1982 in Shenyang in LiaoningProvince, China.When only two years old, Lang Lang saw Tomplaying piano in a Tom and Jerry cartoon on TV (Tom was attemptingthe Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor composed byFranz Liszt). According to Lang, this first contact with Western musicmotivated him to learn piano. He began lessons at three and at fivehe won the Shenyang Piano Competition and performed his firstpublic recital. Lang attended the Beijing Central Conservatory, and In1993,Lang won the Xing Hai Cup Piano Competition in Beijing. He wasawarded first prize for outstanding artistic performance at the FourthInternational Young Pianists Competition in Germany the next year.In 1995, at 13, he played the Op.10 and Op. 25 Chopin Etudes,at Beijing Concert Hall and won first place at the TchaikovskyInternational Young Musicians' Competition in Japan, playing withthe Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert broadcast by NHKTelevision. At 14 he was a featured soloist at the China NationalSymphony's inaugural concert. The following year he began studiesat the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Lang Lang has inspired over 35 million Chinese children to learnclassical piano - a phenomenon named by The Today Show as "theLang Lang effect." In 2001 he made his sold-out Carnegie Hall debutand travelled to Beijing with the Philadelphia Orchestra on a tourcelebrating its 100th anniversary, where he performed to an audienceof 8,000 at the Great Hall of the People. He made an acclaimedBBC Proms debut, prompting a music critic of the British newspaperThe Times to write, "Lang Lang took a sold-out Royal Albert Hall bystorm... This could well be history in the making". Lang Lang recordsexclusively for Deutsche Grammophon, and every CD he has madehas entered the top classical charts as well as many pop chartsaround the globe....
